Early Years Foundation Stage Profile
The EYFS Profile is an assessment of children’s achievement at the end of the year. Children are assessed against the 17 Early Learning Goals and are described as being ‘Below’ (Emerging), ‘At’ (Expected), or ‘Above’ (Exceeding). The EYFS Profile also includes the Characteristics of Effective Learning which are:
- Playing and Exploring,
- Active learning,
- Creating and thinking critically.

This non-statutory guidance was produced by Early Education and the Department for Education to support all those working in the Early Years Foundation Stage.
What to Expect When
This document was written to support parents and carers to find out more about how children learn and develop during their first five years, in relation to the EYFS. It focuses on the seven areas of learning and development which are covered in the EYFS and lets parents and carers know what to expect during this time.
